As the 202526
storm season approaches, the Met Office
has announced the list of storm names
for the next 12 months. A storm will be
named in the UK if the Met Office in
partnership with Met Aaron and KNMI
deems the weather system to cause a
medium or high impact in the UK,
Ireland, or the Netherlands. They're
given names to make storms easier for
the public and media to talk about and
to make people take notice. Some of the
names for the upcoming storm season are
Amy, which was the most popular female
name to be submitted to the Met Office,
and Stevie, which was inspired by a
little girl named after the Stevie Nick
song Dreams, which includes the line
Thunder only happens when it's raining.
You know the one. And you might see that
some names might not be ones that you
recognize. This is because the names
also come from Ireland, Finula, and from
the Netherlands, Vubo. And this is
because the UK, Ireland, and the
Netherlands work together as the western
storm naming group of other parts of
Europe join together to make the
northern and southwestern naming groups.
Let's look at some of the storms from
2425
season. Now, the storm season begins in
September and the first storm last year
was Ashley. It was named on the 18th of
October 24 and made impact on the 20th
of October 24.
Storm Dra was named on the 5th of
December and made impact on the 6th with
a rare red weather alert for 3 million
people in parts of Wales and Southwest
England.
The most recent storm was of course
storm flores which was named on the 1st
of August and made impact on the 4th of
August with winds reaching 82 mph in
Kate Ness in northern Scotland. Storm
Flores was the sixth named storm of the
season making it an average year for
storms unlike 23 24 season which saw a
record-breaking 12 storms in a year.
So, what is the 25 26 storm season
looking like? Well, after a
record-breaking summer, we're now
entering a meteorological autumn. And
that much needed rain is on its way. But
that doesn't necessarily mean we'll see
a stormy season. We will keep you
updated as we find out more.
